It was decided tha Sheffield-based ISP Ask4 are to provide students in the halls of residence with a faster network.

Speaking on the proposed installation, Martin Wrigley, Housing Manager at De Montfort University, explained why Ask4 was the choice for Leicester: “Ask4’s internet packages represent excellent value for money and we believe that their services provide the best match with the requirements of both institution and its students.

Business students will hopefully benefit most from the installation through the ability to research and connect over the internet much faster than before.

Henry Paulson, the US Treasury Secretary convened an emergency meeting of American bankers in Washington this afternoon.

It is believed that Mr Paulson is finalising details of a plan that will use some of the $700 billion bailout to buy stakes in America’s banks.

It is understood that Ken Lewis, chief executive of Bank of America - the financial institution which has just bought Merrill Lynch - Jamie Dimon, chief executive of JP Morgan Chase, Lloyd Blankfein, chief executive of Goldman Sachs, John Mack, chief executive of Morgan Stanley, Vikram Pandit, chief executive of Citigroup, and Robert Kelly, chief executive of Bank of New York Mellon were all ordered to attend.

It came as world stock markets rejoiced after governments and central banks launched an unprecedented global rescue plan, committing trillions of dollars to guarantee bank deposits, bail-out banks and pump cheap liquidity into lending markets.

Gordon Brown called an end to the days of overblown City salaries today as he pumped £37 billion of taxpayers’ money into the partial nationalisation of three of the country’s biggest banks.

Under the emergency refinancing, the three banks participating in the scheme – Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS), HBOS and Lloyds TSB – have agreed to scrap boardroom bonuses for the current year and tie future rewards to performance. Nor will they pay out any dividends until the Government’s interest in preference shares has been fully repaid.

“Our action is driven by our values,” the Prime Minister said today. “For this Government, and I believe the whole country, the guiding idea is fair reward for hard work, effort and enterprise, not incentives for irresponsibility or excessive risk-taking for which the rest of us have paid.”
